1950's Vogue knitting books

As you probably know by now, one of my biggest delights is discovering 1950's treasures (amongst the groovy 60's and 70's and hideous 80's!)
During this weekend's hunt and to my delight I found a pile of Vogue knitting magazines for 50 cents!
I don't know about you but to me they are simply stunning, sometimes I wish I was born into this era.
I might just have to dust of my knitting needles and give one of these a go!

6 birds art

and here they are finished!

Birds of a feather art series.

as you can see I have nearly finished!
I still have some tweaking to do. The earlier ones do have a nice simplicity about them and look good as a group, however because the are being sold separately I have added more detail.
I changed the yellow bird too as I thought it would be nice to keep them in pairs.

new cut paper art work

It was a very happy day yesterday. I have finished all the illustrations for 2 books!
I loved every minute of it and I can't wait to show them to you. They are very cool, no ordinary books either, I'm not allowed to say anymore yet... watch this space!
now that I am free once more I am busy working on 6 little works for an exhibition that is coming up in November. For fun I thought it would be nice to show them to you as they develop from beginning to end. As you can see they have started as simply ideas and shapes. I will up date tomorrow!

KIWI designs

when people think of New Zealand one particular bird often springs to mind, the Kiwi.
it's become one of our best known symbols, in fact people often refer to us as "Kiwis"
We have a wonderful abundance of native birds, many are very intelligent, clever, boisterous, resourceful and full of energy, the Kea for instance. Some say therefor that the shy, flightless Kiwi
doesn't have the personality suited to our temperament, I think that these things come about irregardless of logic and the fact that it is such a unique character will ensure it remain our symbol for a very along time to come.

4 seasons in one day

it's the school holidays and to get the kids away from the computer we spent 3 days at my mums little cottage in the country. It was heart warming to see the new born lambs basking in warm spring sun, the rainbow above is one of the biggest and brightest I have ever seen!

retro fashion!

I've decided to leave the bunting idea for now as I don't want to do the wrong thing with regards to copy right, it has me wondering if all those card companies who use vintage images have sought permission.
I will however continue to share some of my favourites with you!
They say fashion comes around, oh no!
cooking with animal fat (suet) uch!
men wearing ties whilst planting plastic flower pots, knitted helmets to keep ones head warm whilst smoking (yes that's what the instructions called this attractive head warmer) and my fave,  knitted evening wear ponchos, having said that the flouro outfits that are in fashion this spring leave a lot to be desired!
what do you think!?

Tuesday, October 2, 2012

someone has just made me aware of possible copy right infringement with regards to my bunting idea,
I would hugely appreciate it if you have any knowledge on whether it is ok for me to scan them and make them into flags,
the images are all from 1950's and 60's books,
thanks so much!

flowers greet the sun!

what can I say! nature at it's most perfect!

printable bunting flags!

in between juggling several projects I suddenly had a brain wave this weekend with regards to all my various mid century children's books. You see, I have quite a stack of them now and I have not been quite sure how I could use them. I decided to scan one called" the first book of puppets" and it suddenly came to me that the wonderful illustrations would look SO cute as little bunting flags!
and here they are!
I have also decided to make them printables for you to print out on your home printer!
I have framed them up so all you have to do is cut them out!
It's amazing how little flags give a room an instantly joyful feel!
I will have them available in the next few days!
